The Storied Past of Fern Grotto Inn

Fern Grotto Inn has a long and unique history, one that other vacation rental properties can’t tell themselves. We have been in business for 75+ years. All 9 of our cottages and homes were originally built in the 1940s and 1950s. While they’ve all since been renovated, most recently in 2021, they retain their original materials and historic touches.

Ohana House was the first property to call these lush grounds home. Originally built in 1942 using lumber from dismantled supply ships during WWII, the Ohana House was built for a Japanese widow and her 2 children. During the construction of her home, due to a heightened paranoia towards Japanese-Americans, she and her children were sent to an internment camp to wait out the rest of the war.

After the war ended, she was welcomed to her new home, now called the Ohana House.

Seeing the undeniable beauty and business opportunity of her incredible slice of Kauai, she began building the other properties you now see at Fern Grotto Inn and renting them out as transient rentals.

While some things have certainly changed at Fern Grotto Inn, the land and cottages themselves retain their storied past and look forward to a bright future.

Come visit us at Fern Grotto Inn to take part of our unique history here in remarkable Kauai.

We hope to see you soon!
